Master the "Reset Shot" & Own the Soft Game!

This month, we’re tackling the most underrated skill in pickleball: resetting the rally when you’re under attack. (Spoiler: It’s not just about surviving—it’s about setting up YOUR offensive moment!)

3 Steps to Reset Like a Pro

Feet First!

-Stay low with knees bent—never reset from your heels
-Practice catching drives with a split-step → lunge combo (target: 70% weight on the front foot)

Soft Hands, Sharp Eyes

-Grip your paddle at 20% pressure (pretend it’s a ripe avocado 🥑)
-Let the ball “sink” into your paddle—absorb pace instead of fighting it

Aim Small, Miss Small

-Target the opponent’s non-dominant hip (disrupts their ready position)
-Depth > Height: Land resets 2 feet from the baseline to force weak returns

Pro Tip: Film your resets! If your paddle makes a "thud" vs. a "pop," you’re absorbing correctly.

“A perfect reset steals the attacker’s momentum—and hands it right back to you.”

Bob Savar, PPR Certified Instructor and author of six books on pickleball

Wall Drills: The Secret to Better Pickleball (Even If You’re Not a Pro!)

"Practicing pickleball against a wall is a great way to improve accuracy, reflexes, power, footwork, and consistency—but let’s be real, most of us won’t look as incredible as her! Wall drills help develop control and muscle memory, making them a fantastic solo training tool. Just don’t expect to be hitting like a pro overnight—keep practicing and have fun!”
