Have you been nasty or nice this year?
A Nasty Nelson is a pickleball shot in which the server intentionally hits the opposing player directly across from them before the ball bounces. The shot is named after Timothy Nelson, who was known for using it against unsuspecting opponents.
Although the Nasty Nelson is a legal pickleball shot, expect some frustration and pushback if you try it in rec play. Some rec players may consider it a cheap shot, especially when, where, and how hard they have just been hit with the ball. Before attempting the shot, you may want to ask yourself, am I nasty, or am I nice?
My name is Brent Berman, and I live in east Boca Raton. I am a singer/songwriter who started a band called The Charlie Bucket Project. In the summer of 2023, I decided to sign my wife and me up for a ladder tournament at Patch Reef Park. We didn’t know the rules or how to keep score until taking two lessons the week before the tournament. Surprisingly, we could still compete and win a couple of games. We fell in love with the sport and have played several times a week. I recently released a song called Pickleball (The Ballad of Nasty Nelson), which has received positive attention and support. To quote the song, “I never heard of it before, now it’s my favorite sport.” I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy playing pickleball. We play all over Palm Beach County, from Boca Raton to Jupiter.
How to Get the Most Out of Your First Few Pickleball Lessons
Starting your pickleball journey? Fantastic! As a certified pickleball instructor who’s taught hundreds of players, let me share how to make the most of your first lessons. First, relax and have fun—it’s a game, not a test! Focus on learning the basics: grip, stance, and those all-important dinks. Don’t worry about winning; instead, aim for consistent shots. Ask questions—your instructor loves helping! Practice between lessons, even if it’s just bouncing the ball on your paddle. Finally, be patient. Improvement comes with time and effort. Remember, every great player started where you are now. Enjoy the process and keep swinging!
3 New Tips to Improve Your Pickleball Game
Want to level up your pickleball skills? Here are three NEW quick tips:
Master the Third Shot Drop: This shot is a game-changer. Aim for a soft, arcing drop that lands in the kitchen, forcing your opponents to hit up and giving you time to move to the net.
Communicate with Your Partner: Doubles is a team game. Discuss strategies and call shots, and always clarify who’s taking middle balls to avoid confusion and missed opportunities.
Vary Your Serve: Keep your opponents guessing by mixing up your serves. Try different speeds, spins, and placements to disrupt their rhythm and gain the upper hand.
Pickleball Skinny Singles:
How To Play, Rules, & Scoring
In this video from Play Pickleball, released on November 20th, 2024, the hosts introduce the game Skinny Singles, a popular pickleball drill ideal for two players. They explain its two variations, Crosscourt Skinny and Straight Ahead Skinny, demonstrating how the game simulates doubles play by focusing on different court areas.
Key Takeaways:
Skinny Singles has two variations: the Crosscourt Skinny and the Straight Ahead Skinny.
In the Crosscourt Skinny, only the crosscourt diagonal boxes are in play.
In the Straight Ahead Skinny, the court is divided in half, and anything that crosses the midcourt line is out.
The score determines the serving position: even scores (0, 2, 4, 6, etc.) mean serving from the right side, and odd scores (1, 3, 5, 7, etc.) mean serving from the left side.
The game starts with both players playing the crosscourt skinny on the right side of the court when the score is 0-0.
Players continue serving and switching sides based on whether the score is odd or even.
Skinny Singles is played until one player reaches 11 points, just like standard pickleball.
The game involves a variety of shots: dinks, drives, drops, lobs, and speed-ups, simulating real doubles play.
Palm Beach County Pickleball League:
An Interview with Walter Gassner
In my interview with Walter Gassner, coordinator of the Palm Beach County Pickleball League, Walter shares the journey of the league, from its humble beginnings in 2017 with two courts at Avalon Estates to its current success with over 16 teams and 13 divisions. Grassroots efforts, community collaboration, and a welcoming environment for players of all skill levels have fueled the league’s growth. Offering two seasons annually—spring and fall—the league has become a hub for competitive play, blending men’s and women’s teams in a gender-inclusive format.

Finding Your Perfect Paddle:
A Beginner's Guide to
Pickleball Paddle Shapes
Elongated | Widebody |
Choosing the right pickleball paddle is crucial for beginners to enjoy and improve their game. As a seasoned pickleball instructor, I often see players overwhelmed by options. Paddle shape, in particular, plays a significant role in performance, influencing reach, power, and control.
Key Paddle Shapes
Short/Widebody Paddles are beginner-friendly. They offer a larger sweet spot and better forgiveness on mishits, perfect for building confidence and control.
Elongated Paddles are ideal for players seeking more reach and power, though the smaller sweet spot requires more precision.
Handle Length and Style
Shorter handles suit players who rely on wrist control, while longer handles benefit those with two-handed backhands or needing extra leverage.
Rules to Know
According to USA Pickleball, paddles must adhere to strict dimensions: they must be no longer than 17 inches and have a combined length and width not exceeding 24 inches.
Final Tip
Choose a paddle that complements your playing style. Beginners often do well with short/widebody paddles for their forgiving nature, while advanced players might appreciate the power and reach of elongated paddles. Experimenting is the best way to find what works for you!
Better Balance, Better Pickleball:
Tips to Stay Safe on the Court
As a seasoned pickleball instructor, I’ve seen firsthand how important good balance is for staying safe on the court. For seniors, improving balance isn’t just about preventing falls—it’s also about moving confidently and playing your best game. Here are a few techniques that can make a real difference.
Strengthen Your Core
Your core muscles are the foundation of your balance. Exercises like seated leg lifts, planks (even modified ones), or simply tightening your core while standing can build strength. A strong core helps you stay steady when lunging for shots or moving quickly across the court.
Focus on Single-Leg Exercises
Balancing on one leg is a simple yet effective way to improve stability. Try standing on one foot for 10–20 seconds, holding onto a chair for support if needed. Gradually reduce your reliance on support to build confidence.
Incorporate Dynamic Movements
Mimic pickleball moves during balance practice. Side-to-side shuffles, slow step-backs, or gentle forward lunges help train your body for real-game scenarios. These dynamic exercises improve coordination and reinforce muscle memory for better court movement.
Improve Proprioception
Your body’s awareness of its position in space is crucial for balance. Try closing your eyes while balancing or standing on an uneven surface (like a balance pad). This trains your body to adjust automatically when encountering unexpected movements or uneven terrain.
Make It a Habit!
Consistency is key. Spend 5–10 minutes daily on balance exercises, and you’ll see improvements over time.
Good balance is your secret weapon—not just for avoiding falls but also for controlling your game. These techniques are simple, effective, and can keep you on the court longer, playing the sport you love!
Local Player Spotlight: Michael Krooks
For our second issue, we return to the archives to bring you an interview I did with Michael Krooks, a well-known local pickleball instructor, in November 2018 in Davie, Florida. In this conversation, Michael, a seasoned pickleball instructor, shares his journey from tennis to pickleball and discusses his teaching philosophy. He emphasizes the importance of consistency, shot selection, and drills for beginners. Michael highlights the need for players to understand the game’s nuances, offering advice for improving their skills. He also touches on the gear used by professionals and provides details about his competitive play.
Physical Transformation through Pickleball:
Henry Schoenfeld
Here is Henry. At 78 years young, Henry defies the limitations age might throw his way. Henry keeps himself remarkably active with summer spent in the charming town of Ossining, NY, and winters basking in the sunshine of Delray Beach, FL. Pickleball, a sport he picked up about three years ago, has become a cornerstone of his vibrant lifestyle.
It all began at Huntington Lakes, a 55+ Delray Beach, Florida community. Drawn to the lively energy emanating from the pickleball courts, Henry, ever the curious soul, decided to try it. The sport's accessibility—the ease of reaching a decent level of play—was initially appealing. But pickleball quickly blossomed into something much more for Henry.
"Sure, the exercise is great," Henry says with a twinkle in his eye. "It keeps me moving, keeps the blood flowing." And there's the undeniable thrill of competition, the strategic volleys and rallies that keep him mentally sharp. But for Henry, the heart of pickleball lies elsewhere.
"The best thing about pickleball, hands down, is the people," he declares. "You meet folks from all walks of life, people you wouldn't otherwise have a chance to connect with." The courts become a social hub where friendly competition mingles with laughter and camaraderie. Whether swapping stories with snowbirds in Delray or sharing local tips with fellow players in Ossining, Henry thrives on these connections.
As Henry approaches his 79th birthday, there's no sign of slowing down. Pickleball has become an integral part of his life, a testament to the fact that staying active goes beyond just physical fitness. It's about the social connections, the shared experiences, and the joy of community. And on the pickleball courts, with a paddle in hand and a smile, Henry finds all that and more.
