The 7 Ps of Pickleball
(Strategic Planning and Execution)

by Grace Greenberg, retired physical educator/coach, Lake Worth

Practice:  Play smart by practicing skills to (near) perfection and implementing practiced strategies.

Purpose: Always drill with a purpose or intention. Make that skill set automatic for game playing.

Prepare:  Before initiating serves or returns, prepare by recognizing righties and lefthanders and their abilities and preferences. Anticipate returns and get in a better position to be ready faster.

Placement: Hit out of your opponents’ reach or at their feet. Hit to their backhand more often.

Positioning:  Anticipate and prepare for opponents’ returns in order to capitalize offensively.

Power: The best strokes use controlled power in driving, dinking, angling, lobbing, and passing.

Patience:  Success comes by purposefully executing the right shot at the right time and not before.

I still remember the moment vividly. It was a Saturday morning tournament. Match point. The ball was returned fast and low, right down the middle. It hovered just long enough to be taken by either of us. I hesitated. So did Dan. Neither of us moved. Read the whole story here.

A 46-Minute Strategy Session w/ Anna Leigh Waters [ON COURT]

In this 46-minute strategy session, pickleball pro Anna Leigh Waters and her coach break down these core gameplay elements: serving, third-shot decisions, attacking/counterattacking, drilling techniques, and mental resilience. Key takeaways include:

Use variable-speed drives and aggressive drops (Waters' signature move) to disrupt opponents

Master anticipatory footwork (split-step timing) for quicker reactions

Prioritize situational drilling over repetitive drills for match realism

Maintain aggressive confidence despite risks: "Miss more shots but control the game's tempo."

The session emphasizes balancing technical precision with psychological readiness to handle momentum swings.
